On January 8th, 2014, the Atlantic City Free Public Library was selected for a $7,500 contract award* by the New Jersey State Library and LibraryLinkNJ to kick off an exciting new phase of library service for teens and children. Additional funding will be provided by the Atlantic City Free Public Library, a service of the City of Atlantic City. The initiative, dubbed “Make AC”, is part of the new wave of Makerspaces hitting libraries all over the nation.
What is a Makerspace?
A makerspace is a place to explore, create, imagine, collaborate, and be inspired. It contains technology of all sorts, from knitting needles to photography equipment to 3D printers. The makerspace is a hands-on environment where ACFPL teens can learn new skills, be creative, develop products and business ideas, and MAKE things! The library will provide lots of events and training associated with the makerspace.
Where will the Make AC makerspace be located?
Most of the technology will be housed in our existing Teen Lounge on the second floor of the main library building at 1 N. Tennessee Avenue in Atlantic City. To access the teen lounge, you must be between the ages of 13 and 18 and have a library card in good standing. Other requirements may apply as we get closer to the grand opening of the makerspace. Some of the technology will be mobile, and we will be taking it to Atlantic City schools and other venues frequently to allow as many people as possible to explore and enjoy. A few items are designed specifically for children and will be used in children’s programming. Watch our website, facebook, twitter, and Discovery newsletter for our makerspace events and to find out when Make AC will be coming to your area!
What technology will be in the Make AC makerspace?
The Make AC equipment and software will cover 9 major areas, listed below. A full list of equipment will be coming soon, and we will post unboxing videos of some of the best bits as we receive them.
