Jane Austen is truly one of the best authors of all times. She took problems that were far from rare in her time and found wit and humor in them. She aspired to give her characters happy endings although they would have to go through many obstacles to get there. Sense and Sensibility is one such novel. It tells the story of two very different sisters on the same mission. Elinor is the sister with the sense and she is fond of masking her emotions. Marianne is the sensible sister who never even attempts to hide her emotions.
After the death of their father, the Dashwood females are kicked out of their home, lose all their money, and are found in foreign living circumstances. The only solution for the girls who were unable to inherit their father’s fortune is to marry respectably. As with many other beautiful girls, the suitors soon come knocking. However, it isn’t that easy. Sometimes, love is not the only thing that makes a happy ending.
Sense and Sensibility has that dry humor that Jane Austen has so perfected. Don’t be intimidated by the prose in this book. After reading a whole sentence, things should come together. This book is phenomenal and it gets a 10 out of 10 on my scale!
